Sunday 10/1/2083: Juan Albo out for 5-6 weeks MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's rightfielder Juan Albo will miss about 5-6 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 6th inning of the game between Milwaukee and St. Louis. He dove for a drive off the bat of Louis Lora, and immediately signaled that he's not OK after hitting the ground. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Dislocated Shoulder. Surgery will be performed next week. Albo has walked 101 times this year and posts a .403 OBP. While batting .299, 177 for 592, he has driven in 65 runs. |
Sunday 10/1/2083: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced Chicago (A)'s John Blauser had a terrific September, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He started 6 games in September, going 3-1 and compiling an ERA of 0.77 in 47 innings. John fanned 50 hitters. John got two complete game shutouts as well! His ERA of 3.71 helped him to a 14-12 record this year. He struck out 223 and walked 36 in 235.1 innings. John has pitched 3 shutouts and 3 complete games. Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is Florida's Glen Brown. He went 5-0 in September and finished the month with an ERA of 0.96. He struck out 49 in 37.2 innings. Sunday 10/1/2083: Batter of the Month award winners announced The American League's best player of the month was Boston's Pedro Tijerina, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Pedro pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .350 with 8 and 27 RBI while slugging .710. Tijerina has walked 41 times this year and posts a .330 OBP. While batting .281, 165 for 588, he has driven in 111 runs. Milwaukee's second baseman Tyrone Callan had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. He had an on base percentage of .475 and hit .382, while driving in 21 runs. His season features a batting average of .325 (161 hits in 495 AB), 43 doubles, 20 triples and 22 homeruns. Thursday 9/28/2083: Seattle's Cristobal Quiñones goes deep three times LOS ANGELES (A) - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. Seattle's catcher Cristobal Quiñones accomplished that feat in a 18-6 win over Los Angeles (A). A pitch from Zachary Mao in the 4th inning left his bat for a three-run homerun, landing 416 feet from home plate in right-center. His 2nd blast, a solo homerun off Jimmie Maestas in the 8th inning, landed an estimated 408 feet from home plate. His 3rd shot, off Jimmie Maestas in the 9th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in right-center. Cristobal got 3 hits in 6 AB, with three runs scored and driving in 6 runs. Seattle improved its record to 75-85, scoring 18 runs on 20 hits. |
Tuesday 9/26/2083: Michael Taylor pitches his 3rd shutout of the season HOUSTON - Pittsburgh's right-hander Michael Taylor is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Houston on just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 22nd time he has done it in his career. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Taylor (18-4) struck out 7 and walked 3, throwing 60 of 112 pitches for strikes. Sunday 9/24/2083: Baltasar Velazquez collects 2000th hit against Cleveland CLEVELAND - Chicago (A)'s players had every reason to congratulate Baltasar Velazquez, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! Along with his 2000 hits, Baltasar collected 150 homeruns and 865 RBI in 11 seasons. 'My firends always told me that I will do it one day. I never believed it. Good that I was wrong!' With one out in the 9th inning, Baltasar drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. |
Wednesday 9/20/2083: Florida's Richard Okelley ropes five hits PHILADELPHIA - 'Wow, five hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said Florida's centerfielder Richard Okelley after the 15-3 win over Philadelphia. His 1st hit, off Stephen Bates in the 1st inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in left field. Wednesday 9/20/2083: Milwaukee's Mechling out for 4-5 weeks MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee is without its right-hander James Mechling for at least 4-5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Mary Rankin in a game against St. Louis. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Mechling was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle. The 42 year old pitched a perfect game against New York (A), showing the great stuff that made him famous for years. The crowd of 40508 gave him a standing ovation when teammates carried him off the field on their shoulders. Beringer (10-5) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 8. Wednesday 7/26/2083: Arizona's Martin Cintron gets the cycle PHILADELPHIA - Arizona's designated hitter Martin Cintron accomplished a difficult feat in a game against Philadelphia, hitting for the cycle to improve his career batting average to .235! A single in the 1st off Stephen Bates accounted for his 1st hit. In the 3rd inning he belted a RBI double off Stephen Bates. His 3rd hit, a solo homerun off Scott Coleman in the 4th inning, landed an estimated 397 feet from home plate. His 4th hit was a two-run triple off Larry Olander in the 9th inning. Sunday 7/23/2083: Season ending injury strikes Oakland's Garcia OAKLAND - Oakland's centerfielder William Garcia will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Oakland and Minnesota. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Garcia collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Calf Muscle which will require surgery. New York (N)'s right-hander Carlos Leiva fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against Florida on Sunday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Richard Okelley, then suddenly collapsed. New York (N) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Leiva had suffered a Torn Bicep Muscle. This season Leiva compiled an ERA of 3.05, going 2-1 in 6 starts. He fanned 60 while giving up 31 hits in 44.1 innings.
